Writing scripture helps us remember

Writing Out Scripture Helps You Remember God

We find that the brain, is much more active when we’re using our hand to write or draw, as opposed to when typing on a keyboard. In the parts of the brain that are active, we find lots of synchronized oscillations at low frequencies. And these oscillations are linked to learning centres and memory centres.

Neuroscientist Prof. Audrey van der Meer

We know that reading the word of God helps us remember and implement Gods ways. But so does writing out the word.

When you write something down (pen and paper), research indicates that you experience significantly increased activity in the areas of your brain that relate to learning and memory e.g., motor cortex.

Therefore, writing down scriptures rather than just reading them, will help you remember God’s word (and God) more.

So, here’s my question: of all the things a person could write down in their entire life, what would be the most beneficial to them?

The answer has to be … scripture!

Here’s why:
Knowing scripture (and implementing it) will make you:

  • a wiser person who makes better decisions
Jesus points to those who hear and obey his words as wise – Matthew 7:24.
And Proverbs 9:10 tells us that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.
We can’t fear Him if we don’t recall what he says.
  • experience a more peace-filled life
Those who love your law have great peace have – Psalm 119:165.
There is something so delightful about experiencing the profound peace of God.
The peace that transcends our human understanding and travels deeply into the core of our being, will make us unmoved by any adversity.
  • get along better with others
Even if we only learnt and implemented 1 Corinthians 13:4-7, our relationships with others would become spectacularly better. e.g., be patient, be kind, do not be envious, do not boast, do not be arrogant, do not be rude, do not seek your own interests, do not be irritable or resentful.
Always believe, always bear difficult things, always hope, always endure challenging times.
If we worked on getting better at these, not only would we be more loving to others, but we would benefit greatly from the law of sowing and reaping, and receive a lot of love back.
This would greatly improve our relationships.
  • a more prosperous and blessed person.
Joshua 1:8 says the book of the law shall not depart from our mouth, but we should meditate on it day and night so that we may be careful to do all that is written in it.
For then, we will make our way prosperous, and we will have good success. See also James 1:22
  • live longer
For by me your days will be multiplied, and years added to your life. Proverbs 9:11-12
  • more victorious. We will have greater success in overcoming sin and Satan in our life. We do have total authority over Satan if we exercise that authority. Jesus said you can walk on snakes and scorpions and have authority over all the works of the enemy – Luke 10:19. And that you are more than a conqueror through Him who loved you – Romans 8:37

  • have a deeper relationship with God
If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples – John 8:31. The more we know the word of God, the more we know the will of God.

  • a positive thinker
The most positive thinking person is the one whose mind is set on Christ.
Our thought life will be transformed as our mind is renewed and aligned with the thoughts of Christ – Romans 12:2.
Negative thinking and depression dissipate as our mind is set on everything Christ – Colossians 3:11
Knowing Scripture Fills the Mind
  • a more joyful person
The precepts of the Lord are right, giving joy to the heart Psalm 19:8.
When we know all your sins are forgiven, and we have the God of the universe as our personal helper, and we are going to spend all eternity with Him – how could we be anything but JOYFUL!

So, if we want to remember more of God’s word, (so that we can apply it more) then lets consider getting into the habit of writing out some scriptures, as well as reading them.

It’s easy to do.

Just keep a pen and paper with you as you read the word, and as you come across a scripture that particularly stands out to you, simply write it down.

You don’t need to keep the written copy afterwards, because the benefit comes from the act of writing it – and of course you won’t need it again, as you already have it written in your bible.

Try it!
